VIOLENCE
It is considered normal in Pakistan for women to be abused verbally, sexually, physically, and mentally by their husbands and other men. Victims of rape are stripped of their dignity, even though they are in no way at fault.
Close to 50% of female prison inmates in Pakistan are charged under adultery for rapes they cannot prove.
Many women are raped and beaten, too afraid to speak out and terrified by the pressure of the society to stay married. Divorced women in Pakistan are considered “used”, and are a shame to their families and to themselves.
70% of abused women have never told anyone about the abuse.
Women in Pakistan must live up to a certain set of standards. They are expected to abide by the rules of their superiors, whether that be a husband, or their family. Ultimately, women do not get to choose their destiny regarding education and marriage. Many times, they are taken out of school to work, and have arranged marriages in which they are abused, causing depression. Women who do not live up to these standards and become somewhat independent are considered morally wrong. They are usually punished with violence by those who they are subservient to, who hope to convey to other women that they should not go against this so-called tradition.

An honor killing is a murder carried out by the victim’s family members, who believe that their relative has brought dishonor upon the family. Most times, this family member is a woman. They are usually killed on the allegation that they have had a forbidden sexual relationship. Another common reason is women who either marry for love instead of following their family’s wishes for an arranged marriage, or apply for a divorce, shaming their family. They are never given the opportunity to fight for themselves, adding to the ability of the family to justify killing the woman. These honor killings are normally carried out by hacking, shooting, stabbing, or burning the victim. In 2004, a bill was passed that made honor killings a crime.
There are over 1000 females murdered by honor killings per year.
Only 20% of cases are brought to justice.
